Cardiff’s Good Food Movement

Food Cardiff is the city’s rapidly growing food partnership; a part of Food Sense Wales, it aims to influence how food is produced and consumed in the city, and put sustainable food at the heart of a just, connected and prosperous food system.

Since 2019 I have supported Food Cardiff, working on various campaigns to amplify and grow the good food movement within the city.

This has included supporting on the development of the Cardiff Good Food Strategy. Informed by a People’s Assembly along with stakeholder and public consultation, I worked with fellow independent consultant Matt Appleby to facilitate the public consultation, and worked closely with Food Cardiff to pull together the final strategy. In total, more than 2,400 people fed into its creation, with the vast majority strongly in support of the overall goals and objectives.

In 2020, Cardiff was awarded Silver Sustainable Food Places status – becoming the first place in Wales (and one of only six places in the UK) to achieve the prestigious accolade; the scheme is based on bronze, silver and gold achievements across six key sustainable food issues. Following this award and the creation of the Cardiff Good Food Strategy, I assisted with the development of a brand new Food Cardiff website, and delivered a wider public engagement campaign which asked the public to ‘make a pledge’ to help move the city towards Gold Sustainable Food Places Status.

In late 2022, I was appointed to the Food Cardiff strategy board, which includes ten volunteer members from a range of organisations (including Cardiff Council, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Cardiff Farmers’ Markets, Action in Caerau and Ely, Cardiff University). Through this network, Food Cardiff is driving change at a city level and is working to tackle some of today’s biggest social, economic and environmental issues.
